September is National Senior Center Month

Senior centers are the key to aging well for a growing population aged 60+

Arlington, VA (September 4, 2019) – Growing, learning, connecting, giving. These are just some of the keys to aging well. They’re also what older adults discover every day at their local senior center. This September, the National Council on Aging (NCOA) National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC) is celebrating National Senior Center Month with the theme: Senior Centers: The Key to Aging Well.

“If you’ve never visited your local senior center, September is the perfect time to find out what you’re missing,” said James Firman, President & CEO of NCOA. “Every day, more than 1 million older adults visit their senior center to take an exercise class, learn a new skill, make friends, and have fun.”

During September, senior centers across the country will be hosting special events and promoting the vital services they provide in their communities that empower older adults to age well. National Senior Center Month is sponsored by NISC, the nation’s only organization focused on supporting and strengthening senior centers and the professionals who run them. NISC offer best practices, professional development, advocacy, research, and National Accreditation.

“Aging well means different things to different people,” said Maureen O’Leary, NISC Program Manager at NCOA. Whether it’s growing through meditation and gratitude, learning a new language or tap dancing, connecting with friends, or giving back to the community, senior centers hold the key to these and more pathways to aging well.”
