- Validated Malnutrition Screening and Assessment Tools: Comparison Guide
- This document provides a comparison between tools, states appropriate patient populations, and reviews nutritional parameters for each of the tools.
- Malnutrition Screening Tool (MST)
- The MST is a validated tool to screen patients for risk of malnutrition. The tool is suitable for a residential aged care facility or for adults in the inpatient/outpatient hospital setting. Nutrition screen parameters include weight loss and appetite.
- Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA®)
- The MNA® is a quick and easy-to-use screening tool that takes less than 5 minutes to complete. Calf circumference can be substituted for BMI in patients who cannot be weighed or measured. It is the most commonly used form of the MNA®.
- Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST)
- The MUST is a validated screening tool suitable for adults in acute and community settings. The tool is available in several languages.
- Nutrition Risk Screening (NRS-2002)
- This tool includes an assessment of recent weight loss (%), recent intake, BMI, severity of disease, and age.
- Seniors in the Community: Risk Evaluation for Eating and Nutrition (SCREEN©)
- SCREEN© (Seniors in the Community: Risk Evaluation for Eating and Nutrition) is a nutrition screening tool that caters to seniors living in different settings. It determines whether a senior has a potential nutritional problem or is at risk of developing one. The questionnaire has undergone significant validation and reliability testing and is recommended by several national and international bodies, including the World Health Organization.
