For Fifth Time, NCOA CEO Named to NonProfit Times’ Power & Influence Top 50

Firman honored for seeking the power of good ideas

Arlington, VA – James Firman, President and CEO of the National Council on Aging (NCOA), today was named one of the The NonProfit Times’ 2018 Power & Influence Top 50. This is the fifth time in six years that Firman has been selected for the prestigious list.

In naming him, the editors wrote: “Firman has developed national programs that improve the health and economic security of older adults. His ideas are tied to collaborative leadership, fostering and scaling evidence-based innovations, social enterprise, and advocacy. His ‘third act’ for older Americans is gaining steam. Firman seeks the power of good ideas.”

For more than 35 years, Firman has been a leading force for innovation in services, programs, and public policies for older adults. Since becoming president and CEO in January 1995, Firman has led NCOA to become the national leader in benefits access, economic security, falls prevention, evidence-based healthy aging programs, and public policy for older adults, especially those who are struggling.

Firman is the creator of two NCOA signature services that have impacted the lives of millions—BenefitsCheckUp®, a free online tool that screens older adults for benefits to pay for daily needs, and the Aging Mastery Program®, an innovative effort to develop new expectations, norms, and pathways for people to make the most of their gift of longevity.

“Shimon Peres, former prime minister of Israel, once said, ‘You are as great as the cause you serve and as young as your dreams,’” said Firman. “I am privileged to serve the great cause of improving the lives of older adults, and I am grateful to work alongside a team of colleagues who are equally passionate about ensuring that every person ages with their best possible health and economic security.”
